Robin Grasby’s Homework

Usually desks are quite a banal affair, but not Robin Grasby’s Homework Desk.

Young and talented Robin Grasby graduated in June 2009 from Northumbria University, UK with a degree in Three Dimensional Design: Furniture and Product BA (Hons). Currently he is living and working in London.
Homework desk is modern and functional; it starts with simple beech trestle and surface and provides options for storage slings, drawers, book support, integrated ruler, monitor shelf, cutting mat, white board, space for vertical filing and charging ports for small gadgets.

Robin produces the Homework desk himself, by hand in small edition batches. One of his pieces was bought as a gift for the Queen of Denmark, for her birthday. I guess it is definitely a good quality stamp.

Living Rooms

Living rooms can be tricky as it's easy to add too much furniture and make them cluttered. A good living room has a balanced mix of seating, storage, display space and EMPTY space.
The living rooms in these pictures have a good mix of all of the above, as well as showcasing some of the owner's personality and a good amount of varied lighting for all times of the day.

Finnish Product Design

Ardesia design is a very multi-cultural company - from our staff to our designs, our work and inspiration comes from all around the world.
I am originally from Finland and lived there a part of my life when I was younger. Scandinavian design is very popular at the moment, with its minimalist forms and colours and the use of natural materials.
When possible, it's always better to buy designer furniture that's less well-known. A lot of good design nowadays is over-used or over-exposed and somehow loses its appeal. Sourcing products from other countries is therefore, a great way of finding furniture and accessories that haven't had the same exposure as local designer products. Although designer furniture comes at a price, these pieces are long-lasting and much more effective than their replicated counterparts bought from chain stores at discount prices.

Here are some proucts from Scandinavian designers - all are available to purchase from The Finnish Design Shop.

MILAN DESIGN WEEK REVIEW: Pinwu

We liked a lot of the furniture from small Chinese furniture designers 'Pinwu', who we saw at one of the evening events in Milan Centre. Two of the products we really liked were the paper chair and the 'Yi' lamp.

http://www.pinwu.net/

'Piao' Paper Chair

Size:70cm×65cm×75cm
Materials:Beech Wood,Black Walnut,Rice Paper
Color:Original Color

info:
Gluing layers of paper is the way how to make a traditional paper umbrella. Our Paper Seat is using same craft. The paper layers are combined until the chair is strong enough to sit on,but is still keeping its flexibility.Hand made paper is ruch of natural fibers that give strength to carry aperson and is therefore our chice for this comfortable chair.

'Yi' Lamp:
How to remember the last read page of a book after closing it? Just close the book around the main pillar. The book stands safe and reminds the page. The top part of the lamp is made of rice paper which is carried by a solid wooden support. The product contains a pure, innovative and functional design language.

MILAN DESIGN WEEK REVIEW - Talenti

We loved the 'Talenti' products, especially the fabulous outdoor canopies they do with the folding sun roof. It's a great idea and we think it would work fantastically for outside our Golborne pub conversion project. We also liked their range of outdoor furniture and sun loungers. Now we just need the summer. :)

From the Talenti Website:
Tradition, creativity and innovative spirit are the lifeblood of the Talenti team.
Extensive market research and the use of advanced technological tools, sometimes unique, because we have invented and developed, make it powerful and flexible production of Talents.
A perfect combination of craftsmanship and industry are a primary reference of our quality.
The elegance of form, the inlaid precious and difficult to imitate, and the courtesy of the artists assemblers of manufactured talent, are a guarantee of originality and sophistication in every detail visible.
The primary objective is to propose Talents through shapes, colors, materials, a new style of outdoor living.
The character tables of Talents and the balance of harmonies, are the experiment and the challenge of modern dreamers.
In respect of nature and in constant search of beauty, talent wants to be the novelty that was missing in the market.
The greatest gratification, our dream is to meet market needs, our service range, the training, they are humble instruments on which we work constantly to always satisfy our treasure, our riches … the customer .

MILAN DESIGN WEEK REVIEW: Font Barcelona

We really liked the simple, elegant metal lights from Font Barcelona but were more impressed with their collection of sleek, flush-fitting light switches and sockets. They had quote a comprehensive collection and the switch-button look we thought was very nice. We also liked the light-up panels showing house numbers (and even have a project in mind to use these in) - simple, stylish and functional (even in the UK!).

Fontini Profile via Architonic:

Fontini S.A was founded in the early 1950s to manufacture electrical items for the industrial sector. Its founder, Juan Font González, named the company Industrias Juan Font – CIE.

In 1975, his successors joined the company and decided to broaden the range of products, increasing the number of references in the catalogue from 50 to 2,000 in twenty years.
In 1998, Fontini decided to take the route of supplying more decorative mechanisms. It was then that the company developed the Garby series, a range of switches with a novel rotary mechanism and a porcelain body, inspired by the early 20th century period. Since 2000, new product ranges have come to light, such as Garby colonial, Venezia, Dimbler, etc… surface installation systems with tubes that can have a rustic or modern finish. The group entered the world of decoration and interior design with numerous appearances in Casa Decor, international trade fairs, interior design forums, etc. The year 2010 was marked by 2 important events within the group. Firstly, the Fontini Group celebrated its 60th Anniversary and launched a new range of commemorative switches to mark the occasion, the Collection 1950. Exclusive editions have been developed incorporating exquisite SWAROVSKI ELEMENTS, partly designed by the team of designers within the Fontini Group, but also featuring a special edition designed by the French artist Diva, with her Jewel of the Wall, a unique switch with floral lines.
A new division was also created within the Fontini Group, FONT BARCELONA, to manufacture designer products whose brand of cutting-edge mechanisms, Five Dot One (5.1), was designed by the studio Guimerá i Cinca.
There has also been a diversification of activity with the creation by Nancy Robbins for FONT BARCELONA of MORFEO, a design lamp.
As a result of its experience, the Fontini Group has carved out its place in the world of architecture and interior design, understanding the difficulties and limitations faced by architects and interior designers when creating items for the electrical sector, each day developing new products that bring together design, innovation and technology (conventional or domotic) and that respond to the needs of the market. In other words, the customisation of each project through the collaboration of designers recognised for their work and creativity.
Each product is customised, each project unique.

MILAN DESIGN WEEK REVIEW - In-Es Art Design

In-Es Art Design is a fantastic company whose products mirror modern design classics but with a natural, handmade twist. We loved the blackboard-painted lamps, great for kids but with a Tom Dixon-ish design feel. Our favourite aspect of these lamps' design is the fabric-covered cables with the label sticking out from the side. Cute and clever.

Via ArchiTonic:

In-es.artdesign expresses the idea of fusion between (art) and (design) through the creation of lamps and home accessories. (In)ternal and (ex)ternal, light and shadow, matter and spirit – all fruit of pure creativity of the soul. Founded in 2003 by the artist/designer Ocilunam, as a creative project exploring objects and materials that draws on figurative artistic techniques such as fusion and engraving, serigraphy and stencil, saturation and mixed techniques.

The outcome is limited collections, some pieces being unique and exclusive. The style is personal although open to international collaborations. Careful attention is being paid to details and the materials are chosen specifically, such as nebulite®, which creates a certain warm and atmospheric refraction of light, metal alloy, steel and resin.
Having studied esthetics, design and painting in several European cities, the artist/designer Ocilunam has received international recognition. He has participated in both individual and collective exhibitions, with his work ultimately exploring the symbol of the moon and the lunar matter. Interwoven together with the esthetic object and the idea of light, these elements provide the basis for his creations.
