LED - The Future of Lighting

Since 1879, the year when Thomas Edison invented the light bulb, technology has been rapidly progressing. Now scientists believe that LED lighting is the next generation of lighting technology. LED lights work on the principle of using semiconductors to produce light energy, providing cost effective and eco-friendly lighting choice.

Light-emitting diodes have been around for years. Traditionally, they have been used as indicators on electrical devices, such as standby lights on TVs. Nowadays, even though LED Lights represent area of ongoing research and development, they have already become popular among many architects and designers.


 Do they work to save money?
It is suggested that LEDs can last for up to 100,000 hours (12 years), compared with the 1,000 hours (42 days) of traditional incandescent light bulbs and compact fluorescent lamps' (CFLs) 15,000 hours (2 years).
The technology is also much more energy-efficient, LED lights use up to 90% less energy than incandescent bulbs; therefore you will see a significant reduction in your electricity bills. It has been estimated that for every 60W incandescent bulb you replace, you will save up to £17 per year with an equivalent LED light bulb.
The long lifespan and low energy use make LEDs economically attractive because even though the fittings cost more, the running and maintenance bills are lower.
   
What colors are available?
LED lights are available in a range of colors such as, white, blue, green, yellow, orange, amber and red.
White LED light is commonly described by its color temperature and measured in Kelvins. The warm white LED light (2700K) closely resembles incandescent light and has a slight tone of yellow or orange, which is mainly used in residential design. The natural white LED (3000K) gives a much brighter white light and is commonly used in offices, workshops and other work environments. The cool white LED light (4000K) has a hint of bluish tone to it and it is commonly used in manufacturing industries where bright light is required.



Does Lumen matter?
A lumen is a measurement of light directly relevant to human beings. The lumen scale describes the amount of light, or brightness, that the human eye perceives. An average 100-watt incandescent bulb, for example, produces about 1,600 lumens.
LEDs, which are bright enough to replace incandescent for household use, produce the same number of lumens as standard 40- or 60-watt bulbs and typically only use 9 to 12 watts. The U.S. Department of Energy advises that consumers who want to replace a 60-watt bulb should look for an LED that produces close to 800 lumens; for a 40-watt bulb, look for 450 lumens.
  
Cons and Pros of LED lighting for home use…
Pros
- Lasts up to 10 times longer than incandescent or fluorescent
- Generates little heat
- Does not contain any mercury or toxic material
- Uses less energy, saves money on utility bills
Cons
- Not cheap
- New products are being updated and launched rapidly; there is a chance that your new purchase will become out of trend quite quick

All in all, at Ardesia Design we are big fans of LED lights and think that they're going to be around for years to come and will eventually replace all halogen bulbs. The colours and types of LED's available today are so numerous, making the product very versatile and effective in a number of applications. With the number of new LED suppliers we found at Fuori Salone Milan this year at the Euroluce show, we are unlikely to ever have to use the same light twice!

MILAN DESIGN WEEK REVIEW: Pinwu

We liked a lot of the furniture from small Chinese furniture designers 'Pinwu', who we saw at one of the evening events in Milan Centre. Two of the products we really liked were the paper chair and the 'Yi' lamp.

'Yi' Lamp:
How to remember the last read page of a book after closing it? Just close the book around the main pillar. The book stands safe and reminds the page. The top part of the lamp is made of rice paper which is carried by a solid wooden support. The product contains a pure, innovative and functional design language.









MILAN DESIGN WEEK REVIEW - Talenti


We loved the 'Talenti' products, especially the fabulous outdoor canopies they do with the folding sun roof. It's a great idea and we think it would work fantastically for outside our Golborne pub conversion project. We also liked their range of outdoor furniture and sun loungers. Now we just need the summer. :)

MILAN DESIGN WEEK REVIEW: Font Barcelona

We really liked the simple, elegant metal lights from Font Barcelona but were more impressed with their collection of sleek, flush-fitting light switches and sockets. They had quote a comprehensive collection and the switch-button look we thought was very nice. We also liked the light-up panels showing house numbers (and even have a project in mind to use these in) - simple, stylish and functional (even in the UK!).

Fontini S.A was founded in the early 1950s to manufacture electrical items for the industrial sector. Its founder, Juan Font González, named the company Industrias Juan Font – CIE. 

In 1975, his successors joined the company and decided to broaden the range of products, increasing the number of references in the catalogue from 50 to 2,000 in twenty years. 
In 1998, Fontini decided to take the route of supplying more decorative mechanisms. It was then that the company developed the Garby series, a range of switches with a novel rotary mechanism and a porcelain body, inspired by the early 20th century period. There has also been a diversification of activity with the creation by Nancy Robbins for FONT BARCELONA of MORFEO, a design lamp. 
As a result of its experience, the Fontini Group has carved out its place in the world of architecture and interior design, understanding the difficulties and limitations faced by architects and interior designers when creating items for the electrical sector, each day developing new products that bring together design, innovation and technology (conventional or domotic) and that respond to the needs of the market. MILAN DESIGN WEEK REVIEW - In-Es Art Design

In-Es Art Design is a fantastic company whose products mirror modern design classics but with a natural, handmade twist. We loved the blackboard-painted lamps, great for kids but with a Tom Dixon-ish design feel. Our favourite aspect of these lamps' design is the fabric-covered cables with the label sticking out from the side. Cute and clever.

In-es.artdesign expresses the idea of fusion between (art) and (design) through the creation of lamps and home accessories. (In)ternal and (ex)ternal, light and shadow, matter and spirit – all fruit of pure creativity of the soul. Founded in 2003 by the artist/designer Ocilunam, as a creative project exploring objects and materials that draws on figurative artistic techniques such as fusion and engraving, serigraphy and stencil, saturation and mixed techniques. 

The outcome is limited collections, some pieces being unique and exclusive. The style is personal although open to international collaborations. Careful attention is being paid to details and the materials are chosen specifically, such as nebulite®, which creates a certain warm and atmospheric refraction of light, metal alloy, steel and resin. 
Having studied esthetics, design and painting in several European cities, the artist/designer Ocilunam has received international recognition. He has participated in both individual and collective exhibitions, with his work ultimately exploring the symbol of the moon and the lunar matter. Interwoven together with the esthetic object and the idea of light, these elements provide the basis for his creations.








MILAN DESIGN WEEK REVIEW - Manifestos Tribe

A company we loved in Milan was Manifestos Trive, Italian company who produce lovely furniture products using natural materials such as linen, wood and leather. We especially loved the leather poufs with the zip detail (images below) - although they look slouchy, they were actually very structured to sit on and quite solid inside. We also loved the directors chair that folds away into its own carrier bag for easy storage/transport. We first thought that the seat looks so narrow that how can it be sat on but it was in fact very comfortable (and very innovative)!

The materials we use, mainly wood and leather, are uniquely treated with linen oil for wood or vegetable tannin for leather, which allow the material to maintain its beauty, exalt its natural characteristics and help to form that special patina and enchantment of the object. The products are sometimes reinterpretations of historical anonymous famous design projects or can be a new design.
All the production is made in Italy, Montefeltro, with the exception of the sculptural base of the table Africa that is a limited production.
